Testimonials
To the wonderful qualities of Old Quarry Ocean Adventures and the surrounding area.

To Captain Bill, Guide Maris(s)a and all of the staff at Old Quarry
Ocean Adventures,
My girlfriend and I spent five nights in one of the campsites at your
facility in Stonington. Maine, this year during the week of August 18.
We both had a wonderful time!
I wanted to thank you for all that you and your staff did to help us
enjoy our vacation. The campsites were lovely and the shared
facilities clean and fully functional. The store was stocked with
necessities which were very reasonably priced. Employees were
friendly, cheerful and polite. The setting was exceedingly beautiful;
sunrises and sunsets bracketed picturesque views of the ocean and
islands from the dock. The old quarry itself was an interesting
diversion.
Particularly enjoyable was my first-time experience sea-kayaking with
one of your guides. Speaking only for myself here, I am a relative
late-comer to outdoor athletic pursuits and I am leery of a kind of
smirking condescension that veterans often exhibit towards those less
experienced or fit. Bill was free of any such pretense and gave
advice relative to safety and the most enjoyment in a matter-of-fact
way without either judgment or "sales pressure".
Our guide, Marisa, showed us the basics (how to suit up, get in and
out of the kayak, the wet exit, etc.), in such a friendly and
competent way that my and comfort level was high as we set out. I
know I was more confident, and probably more stable in the boat,
because I was less nervous since we had someone with experience and
knowledge with us (knowing I had experienced, capable help on hand in
case I did dunk myself helped me relax enough NOT to dunk myself). I
still felt some nervousness during the crossings between the islands,
what with the extra chop from wind and boat wake, but LOVED paddling
along the lovely, lovely rocky coast in the windward shelter of the
islands. Two porpoises even traveled with us for a while on the
return leg!
The campsite was great and the conformance to quiet time was greatly
appreciated. I would recommend Old Quarry to anyone with a high
ground-clearance vehicle; if Oceanville road were upgraded a little
bit I would recommend Old Quarry to all without hesitation! |

My friends and I visit Deer Isle often and thought we would try
something new this trip. We stumbeld across and ad for this place and
decided to go on the sunset cruise. I can say it was one of the best
decisions i have made this summer! I think i can speak for all of us
in saying we had a great time! The group we were with were very nice
and the staff was very friendly as well! We got to see wildlife and
the sunset was beautiful! Thank you so much for an unforgetable trip. - Absolutely, i only wish i could remember their names...
- I definetely plan on coming back and I already have spoken highly of you to my friends :)

I cannot say how much these annual stays at Deer Isle mean to me…
“Rejuvenated” does not quite say it. Honestly—my weeks up there have
become a central part of my life—an extremely important chance to get
away from it all and annually assess how my life is going and catch a
quiet deep breath before getting back into the fray. For the first
time last summer I had one of my children join me—it meant not having
the quiet “soul time” I have come to cherish from past summers, and I
was not at all sure how a 12 year old boy would do for 10 days camping
in Penobscot Bay. Nonetheless it was one of the best times we ever had
together—and he is already psyched about next summer, as am I. So,
feel great about providing a wonderful respite for so many of us…and,
as I have said before, I have camped at a lot of campgrounds over the
years, but Old Quarry is in its own league…and I really mean that. |

| Old Quarry is a kayaker’s dream camping spot. Walking distance to hot
showers with private walk in campsite over looking the water. |
|
| I’m the first guest of the season, feel kind of honored…very nice
sites, very nice location, peaceful, relaxed & charming hosts.
Beautiful & interesting walk in the old quarry. There, in between the
trees, was something mystic that also Steinbeck sensed where he came
to the isle in 1962. Will definitely come back, if I have the chance,
wish you all the best and a beautiful & successful summer! |

| Dear Bill, First, congratulations on your Maine Tourism Award. It
must be very gratifying to have that level of recognition for your
business. You certainly have developed a very attractive and needed
business. I hope it inspires others to do likewise. There are
several of us in the stewardship end who are also very grateful that
your boat stays in the water for the winter and provides the
opportunity to continue our work year round. |

| I had the best 4th of July camping trip ever! We felt so welcome and
taken care of! Thanks a million to Gudrun, Wendy, Christine, annie
and Capt. Bill. Lily got over her fear of seals and loved the big
crabs in the lobster traps. The 3 hour tour on the Nigh Duck was
fabulous. Green Island Quarry swimming is a must! We’ll be back in
August! Have a great summer! |
|
| Thanks all for 2 weeks of peace, Gudrun for the helpful nature guides,
Todd for Armen’s kayaking adventures, Annie for being the BEST
surrogate big sister. Capt Bill remains a family hero. Good Fall, |
|
| Dear Bill: Thank you for the excellent service going to/from Little
Coot (aka the Little Combs). I feel really stupid for not returning
to Maine for 20 years – it is so beautiful there. Thanks for showing
us seals, porpoises, etc. and for letting the girls drive. They all
had fun. We’ll definitely call you again next time we’re in the area.
We all also want to try some kayaking. Regards, |
